Windows 11 lowers the performance of AMD processors?

Windows 11 lowers the performance of AMD processors – the difference can be as high as 10-15%

The premiere of Windows 11 certainly encouraged many people to update their computer . Unfortunately, some users could feel disappointment after the “switch”, because the new system may show performance drops in some applications – all due to problems with the support of AMD Ryzen processors.

Windows 11 has problems supporting AMD processors

The problems with Windows 11 have been confirmed by AMD and Microsoft, so we’re talking about verified information. What is it actually about?

The first problem is the increased delays in accessing the third level cache (L3) – in the new version of the system they are about 3 times higher than in Windows 10.

Unfortunately, this affects the computer’s performance, especially in the case of applications that are heavily dependent on the CPU cache (in most cases, it is talked about a decrease in performance of 3-5%, but in eSports it can be as much as 10-15%).

These are not the only problems of the new system.

Windows 11 cannot take advantage of UEFI CPPC2 technology, which is responsible for selecting faster, preferred cores, so it may show a performance degradation in applications focused on the load of fewer cores. According to the manufacturer’s tests, the difference is most noticeable in models offering> 8 cores with a TDP of over 65 W.

Highlights-

  • Measured and functional L3 cache latency may increase by ~3X.
  • Applications sensitive to memory subsystem access time may be impacted.
  • Expected performance impact of 3-5% in affected applications, 10-15% outliers possible in games commonly used for eSports.
  • UEFI CPPC2 (“preferred core”) may not preferentially schedule threads on a processor’s fastest core.
  • Applications sensitive to the performance of one or a few CPU threads may exhibit reduced performance.
  • Performance impact may be more detectable in >8-core processors above 65W TDP.

Windows 11 – Microsoft announces a patch for AMD processors

We have some good information here. We know that Microsoft and AMD are already working on a patch that will solve the problems with Ryzen CPU support under Windows 11.

Relevant patches are to be released via Windows Update on the occasion of the October system update.

What do you think about the problems? Have you noticed any performance degradation issues?

Additionally, AMD’s “preferred core” feature, which directs single-threaded applications to the fastest two cores on the chip, also might not work as expected.

This would primarily impact performance in lightly-threaded applications. AMD says this performance reduction may be more noticeable in chips with eight or more cores and a 65W or higher TDP rating.

We reached out to AMD on the matter, and the company says that it doesn’t have more information to share.

However, the advisory says that AMD and Microsoft are “actively investigating these known issues for resolution via software updates” and that AMD will update its advisory when they are available.

AMD also advises that its customers experiencing the issues can “continue to use a supported version of Windows 10,” which implies that it might not be wise to upgrade to Windows 11 until the issues are patched.

Notably, this issue seems to be separate from the performance issues surrounding Microsoft’s recommended VBS and HVCI security settings that have caused an outcry.

Windows 11 is the biggest upgrade to Microsoft’s PC software in years. It not only brings a new design, but it also improves performance and brings better integration of services.
Microsoft is already celebrating the rollout of Windows 11 with an ice cream made especially with the Windows 11 theme.

It partnered with Mikey Likes It Ice Cream for free handouts in the city of NYC.
And if that was not enough, Microsoft managed to light up the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, in Dubai in iconic Windows’ royal blue colours.
