More specifically, Gollum will hit PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on May 25. There will be a Switch version of the game, but Daedalic says it’s planned for later this year.
Alongside today’s news, Daedalic has released a new story trailer. Check it out below:
“The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is a story-driven action adventure,” a press release reads. “Embark on a perilous journey as Gollum, chasing the only thing that is precious to you. Climb, leap, and sneak your way past dangers or into advantageous spots. Gollum is skillful and sly, and torn by a split personality.
It is up to you to decide whether to yield to the darker side of Gollum or trust the kinder gentler hint of Sméagol.”
Check out some new screenshots from the game below:
The Lord of the Rings – Gollum follows the story of Sméagol’s corruption through the One Ring To Rule Them All. The narrative-driven action-adventure title promises to remain true to the original lore, but also will explore “new events and details related to Gollum’s journey.”
“We tell Gollum’s story from a perspective never seen before, in any storytelling medium, all the while staying true to the legendary books of J.R.R. Tolkien,” says Daedalic CEO Carsten Fichtelmann. “At a time when the games industry is undergoing structural changes and seeing new business models evolve, we are excited to realize a huge new production based on a story that has stayed fresh and relevant for more than 60 years.”
The title is being built by Daedalic’s in-house studio using the Unreal Engine and will release in 2021 on PC and “all relevant console platforms at that time.” This likely refers to both current-gen and next-gen consoles.
The press release intimates that Gollum is the first – but not only – title that will come from the partnership between Daedalic and Middle-earth Enterprises.
New The Lord Of The Rings: Gollum Trailer Shows Off The Supporting Cast
When The Lord of the Rings: Gollum was first announced, some questioned how interesting a game based on the shadow-lurking hobbit could be. In the latest trailer, Gollum is still the focus, but it seems like we’re going to get a host of recognizable faces from J.R.R. Tolkien’s universe.
This all-original story takes you all around Middle-earth in search of Gollum’s Precious, which he has lost. Developer Daedalic Entertainment says players should expect to use Gollum’s agility and guile to avoid the dangers on this journey. Though he’s not a fighter, players can expect to stealthily assassinate those who would pose a threat to him or take care of them in other creative ways. Based on the decisions you make, you directly influence his split personality as he toes the line between Gollum and Sméagol.
You can see the new trailer from today, which shows off some of the more familiar faces Gollum will interact with on this journey, below.
Daedelic Entertainment was founded in 2007. In 2022, Nacon acquired the company. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is poised to be the highest-profile release in the company’s history. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is scheduled to arrive on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC sometime in 2023.
