We are lucky that the times when telephones were just sandwiches made of glass and metal are slowly being forgotten. How is that? Well, today, thanks to manufacturers who are not afraid to experiment, smartphones are starting to appear on the market, the functionality of which goes far beyond the “standard” capabilities. Folding telephones, and soon safe and extendable ones, begin to show their usefulness, but before the period of their market domination begins, they face one very important task. They need to show consumers what they have to offer and why they should be chosen. One such device has been in my pocket for the last two weeks and I am of the opinion that I know why this way of designing dual-screen devices may be the future.

LG Wing – a phone that changes the rules of the game

If someone has not had contact with LGWing before, let me briefly outline the principles of its operation. When folded, the Wing resembles a classic smartphone. However, a special slider has been installed under the screen, which allows you to move the display in such a way that it is arranged horizontally in the upper part of the device. Thus, it reveals an additional screen located in the lower half of the smartphone, and both matrices are arranged together in the letter “T”. It is an innovative approach to the subject of multi-screen phones. Until now, if any device had a second display, it was usually a full-size screen attached to the phone or placed on its back. In the case of LG, we are dealing with a design that did not exist before in the world of smartphones. So the natural question is – what can you use it for?

 LG introduces the world’s first swivel 5G smartphone LG is no stranger to dual-screen smartphones. But all its attempts, including the recent G8X and Velvet, involved literal workarounds — through bundled accessories — to get the job done.

LG Wing is an amazing phone …

When a new smartphone comes to the market, we usually have a very unhealthy habit of generalizing how to use it. You know – a powerful processor and a good screen is a smartphone for gaming and multimedia, and many screens and a stylus are definitely a tool for productivity and work on the road. Due to its design, LG Wing defies such generalizations. As for its peeled screen, its presence allows for some very interesting applications. So LG Wing is a phone:

For multitasking left the most important and most used function of LG Wing because it is also the most obvious one. However, there are also some surprise elements here. First of all, both screens have a built-in gyroscope, thanks to which we can use the phone in all positions. Want a large screen vertically to navigate and chat with someone via videoconference at the same time?

We turn the LG Wing to the side and there is no problem. Do we need a comfortable keyboard to reply to an email? We rotate the phone 180 degrees. Do we want to conveniently copy elements between applications? We run on one and the other on the other screen.

GRIP LOCK FOR AVOIDING ACCIDENTAL TOUCH FOR SEAMLESS MEDIA EXPERIENCE –

For watching movies basic screen of LG Wing itself is P-OLED with a diagonal of 6.8 inches and a resolution of 1080 x 2460. Thanks to the high maximum brightness and great colors, it is perfect for watching Netflix or (in my case) YouTube. What does this have to do with being able to rotate it? Well, the fact that, first of all, the phone is much more comfortable in this form, and secondly – the additional screen then performs two functions. The first is of course the multimedia control panel. It is much more convenient and precise to scroll the films to a specific moment if you do not have to move your thumb because of such a large screen.

The second function, however, is even more interesting, because while we are watching a movie, we can run a second application on a smaller screen.

In my case, it was mostly Youtube. The one we know, if it is running, not only irritates with notifications in bubbles, which obscure the image on a traditional smartphone but also, if we do not have YT Premium, makes the film stop when we reply to the conversation. For creating and editing multimedia But perhaps the biggest change compared to ordinary devices LG Wing makes in terms of creating and editing photos and videos. Why? For two reasons. First of all,

 

if we move the device apart when taking photos or videos, we will see a dedicated gimbal mode that uses a wide-angle camera to introduce at least three separate stabilization modes (first-person view, panoramic tracking, and observation mode) and the ability to lock the frame even if the smartphone is moving. Additionally, then we have convenient access to Voice Bokeh and ASMR modes. When it comes to editing – here the additional screen allows us to conveniently access the most important controls – clipping clips, recruiting, adding effects, filters, music, or even emotes.

For games Modern smartphones, although they are the second most popular gaming platform after PC, are certainly not the most convenient. LG Wing has many interesting features, but I was captivated by something else in its use. If we do not need a second screen, we put the phone together and what we have in our hand is … just a smartphone.

 

The complex LG Wing does not stand out from classic devices. It is neither heavier nor thicker than other top devices in its class. Just like them, it has very good cameras, fast charging, and a fingerprint reader under the screen. So there were days when I did not use the sliding screen even once – I just did not need it. And that probably sums up Wing best for me. It is a smartphone that offers a lot of additional possibilities, but none of them interfere with everyday use and does not make the phone any inconvenient / not fully functional in its complex form, as is the case with other dual-screen designs. I sincerely hope this mindset and approach to designing phones will spread as it can only do the industry for good.
