Latest Google Pixel 9: Short Review
Google’s most affordable Pixel 9 has almost all the great features of its more expensive version, but with a few tweaks to compete with Apple and Samsung on price.
The Pixel 9 costs $799, which is $200 less than the top-of-the-line Pixel 9 Pro. It’s also more expensive than the really good, but cheaper, Pixel 8a that came out in May. This new Pixel goes head-to-head with Apple’s iPhone 16 and Samsung’s Galaxy S24.

The Pixel 9 is the same size and shape as the 9 Pro, with a matte aluminum frame and glass on the front and back.
It has the same distinctive camera bump on the back and a similar, nice-looking 6.3-inch OLED screen. The screen isn’t quite as sharp or bright as the 9 Pro’s, but you probably won’t notice unless you’re really looking for it.
Inside, it has the same Tensor G4 chip and at least 128GB of storage, but it has less RAM (12GB instead of the 16GB in the Pro).
In everyday use, you won’t likely notice the difference. The Pixel 9 can handle apps and AI tasks just fine, for now.
The battery lasts about two days on a single charge, which is really good for a phone this size.
It charges fully in a little over 80 minutes if you use a 27W or faster USB-C charger (but you’ll have to buy one separately)
The Pixel 9 comes with Android 15 and will get software updates for seven years. That’s a really long time for a phone to be supported!
Like the pricier Pixel phones, the Pixel 9 uses Google’s latest Gemini Nano AI. It has a new screenshots app that organizes your screenshots and makes them searchable.
The Pixel Studio app lets you quickly create and edit images from text prompts in different styles. Google’s advanced photo editing AI can automatically reframe pictures or even “reimagine” them, letting you change or add things using text.
However, unlike the Pixel 9 Pro, the regular Pixel 9 doesn’t include a year of Google’s Gemini Advanced subscription (which costs about $24 a month).
That subscription gives you access to Gemini Live, the really cool, conversational AI assistant. You still get the standard Gemini assistant for free (for text and simple requests), and you can pay extra for the subscription, but it might not be worth it right now.
The Pixel 9 has the same 50-megapixel main camera and 48MP ultrawide camera as the Pixel 9 Pro. But it’s missing a zoom camera and some of the fancy camera features like enhanced zoom, full-resolution capture, and pro controls.
The main camera takes excellent photos in most lighting conditions. The ultrawide camera is also pretty good and has a fun macro feature for close-up shots.
The main camera can digitally zoom in up to 8x, and while it can produce good results in bright light, it’s not the same as a dedicated zoom lens.
The 10.5MP selfie camera is decent, but not as good as the one on the 9 Pro.
A new feature, “Add Me,” lets you insert yourself into group photos by combining two pictures. It uses augmented reality to show you where to stand for the second picture.
It can sometimes have trouble with objects in the background, but with a little practice, it can take cool photos. Even without the zoom lens, the camera is still really good, but that missing zoom lens is a big drawback.
Google doesn’t give a specific battery lifespan, but it should last for more than 500 full charge cycles and still have at least 80% of its original capacity. Google and third-party repair shops can fix the phone, and they’ll sell genuine replacement parts through iFixit.
The Pixel 9 is made with at least 20% recycled materials, including aluminum, plastic, rare earth elements, and tin. Google has a report that details the phone’s environmental impact, and they’ll recycle your old devices for free.
Overall:
The Pixel 9 is the best non-Pro Pixel phone Google has ever made. It looks and feels premium and has lots of great features, costing a bit less than the top-tier model.
The problem is that without a zoom camera and the best AI features (which are only on the 9 Pro), the regular Pixel 9 is too similar to the much cheaper Pixel 8a.
This puts it in a tough spot. If the $999 Pixel 9 Pro is too expensive, the $799 Pixel 9 is still a lot to spend when you can get almost the same experience for about half the price with the $499 Pixel 8a.
So, the Pixel 9 is a good phone, but it’s overshadowed by better Google phones at different price points. It might be worth waiting for a sale to make the price more appealing.
Good things: seven years of software updates, a great camera, a good screen, good battery life, a good size, recycled aluminum, impressive AI features, fast fingerprint and face recognition.
Bad things: no zoom camera, face unlock isn’t as secure as Face ID, performance isn’t the absolute best, not a great value for the price.
In short:
